Shelia Na Gig
I share this today in honor of Her creator, Lydia Ruyle, whom I had the privilege to meet at the Association for the Study of Women and Mythology Conference this past week. We worked and shared and learned surrounded by the watchful eyes of Lydia's fantastic banners, depicting Goddesses from around the world. Her work is inspired, and inspiring, and quite DIVINE! For more information about this incredible undertaking, which will be created from 1.5 million tons of earth, and take two years to complete, please read this article from BBC news, which includes a video of artist Charles Jencks, who designed the sculpture, explaining why this image is non-offensive. While it is amazing that this Landscape Goddess is being created at all, we are presented with yet another reiteration of the view that women's bodies are something that need to be censored, rather than being something to celebrate.
